BASIC FISH WEIGHT/COIL CHART:
Less than 2 lbs, 8 coil
Less than 5 lbs, 7 coil
Less than 10 lbs, 6 coil
Less than 25 lbs, 4 coil
Dave's Rule #1 for picking the right number of coils? Err downwards! Think about what you catch the most, not what you want to catch. If you fish for 1 pound fish on Tuesdays and 15 pound fish on Wednesdays, then buy two different rods. More typically, we catch fishin in a range--2 lbs or less 2-6 lbs and so on. If you get the occassional 6 pound fish, don't step up to the 6 coil, stay with the 5 coil.
Here is a blog where I discuss a bit more indepth the different Emmrod rods. http://www.mycompactfishing.com/blog/categories/fishing-equipment/
