Hello everyone.

I made a quick visit to Jerry’s Landing at Eloika Lake, Spokane County, Washington today. I wanted to take a couple photos of what was working. My photo for the crappie, sunfish and perch bait came out so fuzzy as to be worthless. I will try to replicate it later. To the left is a photo of the sign at the entrance to Jerry’s Landing. Check them out.

Here is the view from the driveway looking in at the resort. The dock in the center is one of two docks they have where you can fish. Based on the boats there, I think you can also make long term docking arrangements. Give them a call and ask if that is what you need.

Here is the store to buy bait and candy and soda and supplies at Jerry's Landing, Eloika Lake, Spokane County, WAJerry's Landing, Eloika Lake, One of the two docks

I asked Lauri what was biting and here is her report. The crappie and perch are a bit slow. The bass are biting pretty well. Seems like the middle of the lake was one of the better spots for them. Stop by and pick up supplies and get your boat in the water. $3.00 is pretty cheap when you factor the fishing tips you’ll get into the mixture. Why waste time when you can go directly to where the fish are biting?

Fuzzy foto of the crappie, perch, sunfish and bluegill lure.

Sorry for the poor quality of this photo. This has a very light weight of about 1/80th of an ounce on it and can be used to jig, reel in slowly, on a bobber or with a worm attached as well. For the crappie, play it about two feet down. For the perch, try about 4 to 6 feet down. This next photo is a great lure for the bass.

First photo of this bass lure for Eloika Lake

You can throw it out and drag it back slowly. You do not want it too deep in the water. A couple of inches should be adequate.Second photo of this bass lure for Eloika Lake…………………Here is another photo of this bass lure for Eloika Lake which gives another angle.Great Bass Lure for Eloika Lake……………..Here is yet another option for Bass. This plastic worm seems to work well both in the water and then on top of the lily pads. In the later option, you cast the lure onto the lily pad and jiggle it. The Bass will come up out of the water to get the worm. I guess they might see some of the shape of the lure from under the water and combined w/ movement, it becomes irresitable.

Great Bass Lure for Eloika Lake

High School is not a happy memory. In fact, I have often said prior to my first four years in Spokane, Washington, it was the worst 3 and a half years of my life. I just attended my 41st year High School Reunion. I feared going and almost backed out at the last minute. In the end, I went and am glad I did.

From Jan 1964-April 1969, I attended Faith Academy just outside of Manila, Philippines. We returned to the Philippines in January 1964. My parents, brother and two sisters went on to Mindanao where we worked. As there was no school beyond 8th grade for me to attend, I stayed in Manila to attend the boarding school for missionary kids, Faith Academy. This school comprised kindergarten to twelfth grade. I joined in the middle of my freshman year. There were 320 souls k-12 the year I graduated, 1969.

I never felt at home at this school. Why? I missed my family and all that was familiar to me in Mindanao; I was an interloper who jumped into the puddle at the middle vice at the beginning like a huge number of the kids who had gone to school together since they were little; I am old short and fat now–back then, I was young. In a school where basketball prowess establishes social standing, I was swinging on the outhouse door. I also made my share of stupid mistakes which aided the alienation. Finally, I think the angst of being a teenager wore heavily on my psyche. If all had been perfect, I would still have struggled.

Was High School all bad? Of course not! There were many bright spots. Wrestling Coach Steve St. Claire was not a bright spot, he was a beacon! He was a lighthouse on a distant stormy shore. I do not know how many times he comforted me in my unhappiness. I do not recall him ever giving me much advice, he was just there to listen. This continued into my adulthood where he and his wife, Dottie gave me advice and succor many times over the phone, in person and in letters. This still continues from time to time. There were teachers who encouraged me greatly: Miss Sommerville, my English teacher. Mrs Brunemier, who thought I hated her as we butted heads often, apologized to me at graduation. She had no need as most of our headbutting was because I never shut-up. Mr. Musgrove and several others whose names escape me at the moment were kind and helpful. While many of the kids were cruel, others were wonderful. Annie and Glee Ritchey, Becky Eames, Joy Brown, Jim Long, Jay Kyle, and Paul Lavender are individuals who come quickly to mind. There were very good experiences as well. The Senior Play, wrestling (Finals for the league tournament: 2nd my Junior year and first my Senior year.) Cross Country (Coach St. Claire said of me “Atherton, you are the only person I ever met that run’s slower than he walks.” I treasure that to this day! It was so true.) There were some nice trips to Pinatubo mountain and the ocean. I loved attending the Union Church in Manila. I am sure many of the sermons derived from Barth’s musings have at least a sub-concious impact on me to this day. And finally, a trip to Carol and Emily Gordon’s home with my friend Paul Lavender has been a sweet taste in my mind on many occasions over the past decades. Included are the bus ride, the long hot shower where I used up the hot water, the time at the beach and just being in with a group of people for a while.

Yet, I left school very angry. Angry at a couple individuals and certainly angry at Basketball. I have long since lost my anger–but not yet developed love as demanded by Scripture for those who despitefully use you–for the individuals. As for basketball, I feel no scriptural need to seek its forgiveness or–regardless of what poetry in motion those big professional ball players are–develop an interest in or love for this sport. I shall enjoy hating it until I cross the great continental divide. I am sure “it” mourns my disdain.

I looked at my experience at Faith as a very dark umbrella overwhelming the few points of light underneath and that feeling has persisted for four decades. I have tried to bury it, eliminate it, hide it and make it go away. Unfortunately, it has been a zombie climbing up from the pit at the slightest tug of memory. It is so persistent. This reunion has helped in many ways. I would say the umbrella is still there. But, because the points of light under it have increased both numerically and in intensity, the umbrella is now a light grey and not so overwhelming. The good is finally beginning to balance out the bad. I am very thankful I went. Here are some of the factors from this reunion which have brought me a measure of relief.

First and foremost. Paul Lavender was a very good friend to me during our mutual sojourn there. I do not know if he made a conscious effort to do so, but, I felt somewhat protected by his friendship. He was a year older than I and I missed him greatly after he graduated in 1968. For years, rumors circulated regarding his stint in Vietnam and his struggles after Vietnam. Because Paul was going to this reunion, I could not cancel. To see Paul happy and contented with a wonderful wife–no doubt a significant causal part of his contentment–was a great joy for me. Thank you Helen Eyestone for having Paul publicly share the circumstances surrounding his receipt of a silver star. For those who do not know, the silver star is functionally the third highest possible award one can receive: Medal of Honor, two different distinguished crosses, then, the silver star. Much of the award process runs around rank and politics. For an E5 to earn the silver star, you must really do something extraordiany because everyone around you is doing amazing things. Paul, I am sure I join the three men whose lives you saved and their families in thanking you! But, no surprises here, you had already earned the Medal of Honor from me for high school.

Emily Gordon came up to me at the airport and gave me a hug and asked if I recalled pulling her out of the ocean. We all dream of rescuing a beautiful damsel in distress. Emily, HOW COULD I POSSIBLY FORGET! Emily’s encouragement and friendship are a wonderful thing.

My class was pretty much AWOL from this event. Thanks Kitty for showing up. You are still your sweet self after all these years. I am happy for the joy you found in the later part of your (still young) life. Great to see you and your Sis again.

Spending time with Paul Hendricks and his wife Linda was really great as we have a shared interest in wrestling and bees. Look for a special blog on the little buzzers. Paul was THE man on the wrestling team during my Junior year. He had to eat a lot to break 115 pounds. He wrestled 2 or 3 classes above that. Only one wrestler stove off his prowess and avoided a pin. Of course, that was because Paul insisted on pinning him with the Banana Split move. I imagine that guy is still holding his crotch in agony at those tortured inner thigh muscles. 8.75 minutes out of nine being stretched as if you were on the rack. Congrats to you, who ever you were! You deserve a medal for toughness.

Being able to sit down with Coach Hardeman for a few minutes and discuss Faith was also healing. He has given over 40 years (along with his wife) to this school, the Philippines and the kids of Faith. As the CMMIC in charge of basketball, we shared letters several years ago regarding my issues. It was good for us to talk in person. Thanks Tine for the time.

Finally, the many people who were friendly to me at this reunion and especially those who were younger than myself. A number were very warm to me–beyond the generalities of a shared experience–which led me to believe I may have touched their lives in someway during my time at Faith. I choose to believe that and that relieves much of the burden of what I felt were pretty much wasted years. Never forget great roommates (Sandy, Rick, Kieth and one other who I did not see much.)

To those who I did not get a chance to sit down and talk with, Brian Boyce pops in my mind, I am sorry we did not have opportunity to talk. I would have liked to discuss your time in the service and your motorcycle which I happened to see as you were leaving. Your Dad was helpful to me as my dorm father. Thanks for sharing him with so many of us. I am sure that was difficult for you.

I have a friend of nearly 4 decades, Don (and I will protect his last name.) who says “No matter how bad things get, you can never loose your ability to laugh at those that are less fortunate than yourself.” While I disagree with that statement-as does he in reality-it is poignant in this discussion. As a teenager, I and likely most of us, was wrapped up in my own egocentric evaluation of the depth of my misery. The problems of others were invisible to me. I was amazed as I talked with or listened to others who I thought were very blessed–and we will not discuss individuals–who made my sadnesses and problems pale in comparison. While I missed my parents, I did not doubt their love. While there were some stresses between me and my siblings, we were not played against each other by our parents. While sometimes I felt left out, I sought out friendships outside of the school to augment those within the school. Others felt a total sense of isolation. In short, I can now rejoice my problems were really so insignificant. On the other hand my heart turns for those of you whose problems dwarfed my own. You all hid them so well!

Finally, Helen, Joni and all the unseen hands that helped put this reunion together. Thank you so much! Like an iceberg, the good time at the reunion is visible, the great mountain of work below the water level that supports the visible tip dwarfs the final performance.

A final PS goes to my wonderful sister, Debbie Warkentin. I am so glad you came. We see each other far to infrequently. It was good to be together again and I really enjoyed our date into town.

Hi Spokane County area fishermen, ladies, boys and girls. Here is your August 10th Eloika Lake fishing update. I touch bases with Lauri and Jerry of Jerry’s landing every couple weeks or so to find out how the fish are biting. They are the experts who are on scene providing much of the bait, the lures, and some of the non-motorized boats to the fisher folk who stay at their resort and campground. They are a convenient place to fill up on those necessities you forgot to bring with you through their small store so stop in and visit. Their contact information is below.

If it is perch and crappie you crave, disappointment may be in your future as both are slow right now. If you want to go wit to wit, hook to fin with bass, load up and head for Eloika Lake. People using Jerry’s Landing caught a five pound bass last week and others caught two four pound bass this week.

There are two ways to get your boat in the water. The public launch is located at the end of Bridges road on the east side of the lake–North on Highway two to Miller’s One Stop, left at the flashing light and you drive right to the public launch area. Do not forget the parking pass available at any fishing license seller.

The second is Jerry’s landing where there is a small fee ($3) to park and launch your boat but you also have the store where you can stock up on the last minute needs you forgot or replenish what you use up. You can also get updates on where the action is and how to fish. Huge value for small dollars. Tell them “Dave sent me.”

Jerry’s Landing: 41114 N Lake Shore Road, Elk Washington. PHONE: (509) 292 2337. N on HWY 2 past Miller’s onestop to Oregon Road. (If you get to the divided highway, you have gone too far.) After turning left, go to Regal/Eloika Lake Front Road (Same intersection, regal to the right, E. L. front road to the left.) Turn left and follow that around to Jerry’s landing.

Happy fishing.

How wonderful life is out fishing on Loon Lake, sStevens County, Washington. If you buy either of my Loon Lake Listings, you too can conveniently enjoy the finer pleasures of Inland Empire Life.

Loon Lake, Just before Dusk

My Good friend Jim M and I have been threatening to go fishing for quite a while. We had three problems. We both thought we were too busy. That should never be an excuse to keep you from fishing! I did not have a boat. Finally, his boat was not working. As neither of us can walk on water and there is not that much open shoreline at Loon Lake, we were dead in the water.

Emmrod Compact Fishing Pole, Mountaineer

Finally, Jim got his boat licensed, the motor running, the life preservers in place and everything except the running lights squared away. So, we made our date with destiny and headed off to fish. I provided the night crawlers, the canned corn and we stopped at the Loon Lake Grocery and I picked up marshmallows and maggots.

The public launch is around the back side of the lake at the NW corner of the Lake. It is very up-to-date and convenient. Plenty of parking, a nice ramp and a great dock donated by Knight’s Ez Dock in Deer Park Washington. (Touch bases w/ them if you need to install a dock: Daved@knightconst.com Knight Ez Dock, 28308 N Cedar Road, Deer Park, WA 99006 (800) 654-8168.)

So, off we went to catch a few whales. Theory vs. Practice!

Heading out for the Big Ones

Well, the motor was working OK but not great. In fact, it moved us along at about 25 percent efficiency. It was late, we did not have lights, so, we decided to limit our distance. While Andrew was excited about the chance of rowing back, the idea failed to excite either Jim or myself. We went around the first corner of the lake and threw in our anchor. We got our gear ready, baited and threw the lines in. We were using about two feet leaders on a swivel with an egg type weight just above the swivel. We were in about 30 feet of water and fishing just above the bottom. Jim drew first blood with a small bass. Unfortunately it swallowed the hook so we had to keep it. I caught the next fish which came easily off the hook and we released it. Pretty quickly, the wind picked up so we retreated around the corner of lake back towards the dock. Our fishing there was fruitless. After about 20 minutes, we returned to where we had been previously and just dealt with the wind. The fish were biting as fast as we could throw in the bait. All were small blue gill and sunfish, but a great deal of fun.

Our First Catch, a little bass.

This was a fine day for me as I had a chance to do some boat fishing with my Emmrod Packer. I was using the seven coil rod tip. Frankly, I should have used the 8 coil or the top water rod for the additional sensitivity I would have had with those rods. Never-the-less, the 7 coil was gentle enough to provide a lot of fun. It clearly transmitted the bites and nibbles of these little fish.

A little blue gill like many we caught this evening

The four fish we ended up keeping.

I would have liked to release all these fish, but, sometimes, you just can not help but injure them too much to release them. Andrew had a good time cleaning them up for later consumption when we got back to shore.

Check out the Emmrod compact fishing system at my web site. You will find a wide range of Emmrod Fishing products. Also, there are videos to watch showing the Emmrod Compact Fishing system in use pulling in nice big fish.

While you are thinking about fishing at Loon Lake, Stevens County, WA, why not think about buying a home up there so you can do it more conveniently? I have two listings, one single family home at 40490 Gwenelen Road,in Morgan Acres. This home comes with access to a beautiful beach park. It is now reduced to only $114,900!

http://tours.tourfactory.com/tours/tour.asp?t=586565&home=www.mycountryhomes.com&slink=-1&sReferer=http://mycountryhomes.com/&idx=&r=http%3A%2F%2Fmycountryhomes.com%2F

The other home is a great place to live, a business opportunity and a Man Cave all wrapped up in one property. The zoning is commercial and the building would lend itself to many uses. This turn of the century home has so much character and has beautiful stained glass accents throughout. Best of all, it is only about 6 minutes from the Loon Lake Public Launch. Perhaps you could open a great fishing tackle or fly tying school here? Check out the tour!

Keep Loon Lake in your mind for both fishing and living. It is only about 30 minutes north of Spokane about 15 minutes north of Deer Park. There are many other lakes in close proximity. Eloika Lake, Deer Lake, Jump off Joe Lake, Diamond Lake, Sasheen Lake are all within about 30 minutes of Loon Lake. Come visit!

Sponsored by Atherton Enterprises and Emmrod Mountaineer Combo. Like the Kayak King, the Mountaineer is great for all those tight space fishing requirements. It has an added perk in its adjustable handle. This really helps those with arthritis and carpel tunnel syndrome. http://www.mycompactfishing.com/cgi/commerce.cgi?search=action&category=MOUN

The fishing has been a little slow the last week. Our water temp. is 81 degrees and the lake turned over, so we think that maybe by next week the fishing should improve. They are using top water baits right now out in the center of the lake. The crappie are found in the open holes in the center of the lake, mainly in the evenings. The best time for the bass have been at dawn and evening.

In an earlier conversation, Julie told me they had some very nice large bass and the crappie were a good size as well. Keep your eye on Eloika Lake as it is one of the most fun lakes for me to fish. I like it that you never know, just like Forest Gump’s box of chocolates, what is going to be on the end of the line. Perch, Bass, Crappie, Trout? Who knows. That is what makes it fun.

Quick update on Chewelah’s Chataqua Craft Fair.

Two days down, Sunday to go. It has been an interesting show. My main regret is not being able to actually enjoy the show! Selling Emmrod by myself in my booth pretty much nails my foot to the floor. If I can get up there a bit early today, I might run through the craft show.

There has been a regular stream of people moving up and down the street and it has been a friendly show. Sales are reflective of the current state of economic affairs, sadly. I will remind folks who read this today that I have a fine selection of daylilies. I really rather not carry them all home so, if you are interested in daylilies, come by and dicker with me today!

Hi folks. I will be setting up across from Zips during the Chewelah Chataqua Craft Fair this weekend. I will have a full array of Emmrod products as well as the Rhino Tarp Clip on hand so come by and learn about these great products. Bring the wife, I will have a great selection of Daylilies as well. The Daylilies come from my Garden in the Deer Park area. We grow about 250 kinds and I have about 80 kinds potted up and available for sale.

The Rhino Tarp Clips are the perfect product for all those camping tie down needs. Come see them in action!

Look for the Emmrod Packer, the Emmrod Mountaineer, the Emmrod Kayak King, the Emmrod Stream Master Fly Rod, The Emmrod Gulf Master I and II and the Rugged Flex pole designed for those big guys over 100 pounds. Catching minnows to monsters, little to lunker, Emmrod is the rod for you!

Plans are also underway to attend the Sandpoint Idaho and Colfax Washington Fairs in August and September. Stay tuned for details.

I am always looking for places, people, products for www.MyCompactFishing.com that are related to, accent or compliment The Emmrod Compact Fishing system and my web site. I have two new entries, one a destination and the other the Rhino Grip Instant Tarp Eye which is the subject of this blog. Hang on and see what you can do with this great item!

Why is this the best “instant grommet” on the market? Because it is so versatile. The bolt can be removed and reinstalled through the grommet then tightened down so the clamp holds the tarp. This doubling of the grip on the tarp protects the life of the tarp and helps keep it in place in weather.

Reinstall the bolt through the eye and tighten down doubling strength

If there is a missing grommet or the distance between grommets is too far for your application, you can install a clip at whatever interval gets the job done for you.

Once installed, you have two options for connection to the bungee cords or line holding the tarp in place. You can do a quick catch with the hook or if you want more permanency, run the line through the eye.

Now, besides the obvious tarp application, how can you USE the Rhino Clip? Kind of like the lover of yore–How do I love Thee? Let me count the wheys. (Maybe that was the cheese maker?)

–Have a bunch of wet gear or shoes? clip and hang up to dry.

Loon Lake Stevens County Washington Saftey check list. Probably also effective for Spokane County, Pend Orellie and all the other lakes and rivers here.

Today was open house day for me at Loon Lake. I had two listings open and another agent in the office had a third open. I did not have to personally sit at any of these homes so I went to the public access point for Loon Lake. I figured I would cast my Emmrod Packer for an hour or so and see if I could either get a fishing pole sold or get someone to go to the opens. I put an open house sign on the back of my car and went fishing. Well, I think any fish in that little estuary where the ramp is were scared away by the boats. No nibbles from either lake fish or house fishers.

Here are my listings in Loon Lake. The first includes a house, a shop and retail store and a newer heavy duty man’s domain with its own electrical meter. Zoning permits both residential and commercial. Loon Lake access is through the public access point. http://tours.tourfactory.com/tours/tour.asp?t=596611&home=www.mycountryhomes.com&slink=-1&sReferer=http://mycountryhomes.com/text12.swf&idx=&r=http%3A%2F%2Fmycountryhomes%2Ecom%2Ftext12%2Eswf

My Second is in Morgan Acres on the North side of the lake. It has a wonderul private park area with a great big dock, picknic areas and restrooms. Living here lets you have access to the lake for ease of fishing. There are some boat slips but are on a waitlist. This is a lovely home which could be a vacation get away or a year round home as it is for the owners now. http://tours.tourfactory.com/tours/tour.asp?t=586565&home=www.mycountryhomes.com&slink=-1&sReferer=http://mycountryhomes.com/text12.swf&idx=&r=http%3A%2F%2Fmycountryhomes%2Ecom%2Ftext12%2Eswf

Apparently, the guys who were out on the lake did ok. Several indicated they had limited out and others had caught one or two trout. They all seemed pretty happy at having gone out onto the lake.

I thought it would be good to put a bit of safety information on this blog so I talked with Jim, the Sherrif’s Deputy and one of his co-workers. They gave me a copy of the citation form so I could cover it all. I believe they were providing courtesy inspections but ultimately, these will morph into ticketing events so we all need to get our ducks in order (That season actually starts about September.)

Here is the check list for your records. This comes directly from the Washington State Vessel Inspection form which the Deputy gave to me.

These are all required items:

Registration Numbers Properly Displayed

Current Decal Properly Displayed

Certificate of Numbers on Board. (Not sure what this is)

Mandatory Education Card

Motor Vessel Checklist (for rentals only)

Flotation devices: USCG approved and correct size (kids, adults etc) Adequate number and condition. Type IV (16′ and over.) Floatation device must be worn by Child 12 & Under on less than 19 footer.

Fire Extinguisher (on motorized boats) approved model and charged.

Muffler in Adequate Condition. I assume this is thefor the engine and not to keep your neck warm.

Lights with proper display (Night Only) I would think it would be a good idea for them to be squared away regardless.

Adequate distress signals–flares, louldspeaker.

Flame Arrestor Adequate for your vessel.

Sound Device like a horn or whistle.

Ventilation/Blower for the Engine.

Ski Flag properly displayed and of proper Size.

Carbon Monoxide Decal (Gas Only, No PWC)

PWC Lanyard Used

PWC Operator 14 & Older

Also important but not a major focus of the Sherrif’s depart is the invasive Aquatic Species. Read up on those issues and be smart.

Well, that is a quick list. If any of that is Greek to you, because some of it is to me, you might give the Sherrif’s department a call and check it out.

Bottom line, be safe or be on the bottom. The former is far better than the later.

Happy fishing!

This blog is sponsored by the Kayak King, a fine fishing product from Emmrod Fishing Systems. Check it and many others out at www.WhyBuyEmmrod.com or www.MyCompactFishing.com
