Hi Spokane County area fishermen, ladies, boys and girls. Here is your August 10th Eloika Lake fishing update. I touch bases with Lauri and Jerry of Jerry’s landing every couple weeks or so to find out how the fish are biting. They are the experts who are on scene providing much of the bait, the lures, and some of the non-motorized boats to the fisher folk who stay at their resort and campground. They are a convenient place to fill up on those necessities you forgot to bring with you through their small store so stop in and visit. Their contact information is below.
If it is perch and crappie you crave, disappointment may be in your future as both are slow right now. If you want to go wit to wit, hook to fin with bass, load up and head for Eloika Lake. People using Jerry’s Landing caught a five pound bass last week and others caught two four pound bass this week.
There are two ways to get your boat in the water. The public launch is located at the end of Bridges road on the east side of the lake–North on Highway two to Miller’s One Stop, left at the flashing light and you drive right to the public launch area. Do not forget the parking pass available at any fishing license seller.
The second is Jerry’s landing where there is a small fee ($3) to park and launch your boat but you also have the store where you can stock up on the last minute needs you forgot or replenish what you use up. You can also get updates on where the action is and how to fish. Huge value for small dollars. Tell them “Dave sent me.”

The fishing has been a little slow the last week. Our water temp. is 81 degrees and the lake turned over, so we think that maybe by next week the fishing should improve. They are using top water baits right now out in the center of the lake. The crappie are found in the open holes in the center of the lake, mainly in the evenings. The best time for the bass have been at dawn and evening.
In an earlier conversation, Julie told me they had some very nice large bass and the crappie were a good size as well. Keep your eye on Eloika Lake as it is one of the most fun lakes for me to fish. I like it that you never know, just like Forest Gump’s box of chocolates, what is going to be on the end of the line. Perch, Bass, Crappie, Trout? Who knows. That is what makes it fun.
Those who know me, know I am a licensed real estate agent in the Spokane WA area. Being a Realtor, I have access to all the information on what is listed for sale at any of the lakes in this area. I just printed a list of properties on the lots just at Deer Lake, Sacheen Lake, Diamond Lake, Reflection Lake, and Eloika Lake. There were well over 100 properties on just that list. If you search the Spokane Multiple Listing Service (MLS), you will find over 800 waterfront lots.
Waterfront lots come in two varieties. Primary and Secondary. Primary waterfront means you walk out of your house or RV and go straight to the beach. Secondary waterfront means you are in the development and theoretically have access to the water through a community or shared waterfront access. The waters get a bit murkier when we have land near the lake and there is a convenient public access. Personally, I would not consider that as a Secondary waterfront lot. But, practically, it works the same way except there is a much larger population base using the ramp, the dock or whatever facilities are there.
Take my two listings in Loon Lake. One is in Morgan Acres and has access to a lovely park, ramp and dock. That is quintessential secondary waterfront. My other listing there is in the middle of town, about 7 minutes from the public access and while it has a home, a store front and a shop on a second electrical meter–all with commercial zoning, it is not a “waterfront” lot.
Getting to Eloika Lake, there are currently ten lake properties for sale. The prices run from 80,ooo to 1,150,000 dollars. Four are vacant lots. One is a Mobile Home. The balance are stick built homes. Eight are primary lots and 2 are secondary lots. Two are less than an acre and the balance are between 1 and 10 acres EXCEPT a 60 acre estate with frontage and located close to the public access point. Not unexpectedly, this is the one which is priced at 1,150,000.
A couple of the homes priced in the 750,000 price range are beautiful newer homes. Other lots are running in the 2-300k price range.
So, if you love bass, crappie, trout and bullhead fishing, this may be the place for you. I may make a note here and there, but, mostly, I purloined this article upon which I stumbled. I have left all of the attributions in so you know who the guilty parties are.
I am not sure if I approve of this genetic modification. Generally, I support reasonable genetic playing around, after all, all advances in agriculture and animal husbandry resulted from controlling the reproductive process of whatever was being manipulated. Jacob did this to his father-in-law to insure the goats and sheep he got to keep were the ones likely to be borne. I believe that was based on color. I forget who I studied about as a kid, but, I still recall the controlling of which peas got to fertilize the other peas led to the development of better peas. I have over 250 named varieties of day-lilies many of which are triploids, you got it, genetically modified plants and beautiful! Slaves, sadly, were bred for strength. Commenting on this fact caused Jimmy the Greek his job when he discussed the link between the prevalence of blacks in football and the foul habits of slave owners to breed their slaves for desired characteristics. You and I picked our brides and grooms based on certain genetic traits we found attractive. So, fiddling with genetics is not new. But, when you start using technology, we start to get nervous. Maybe with good reason. Somehow, Arnie the trout bothers me. I look at this body and do not see muscles, I see tumors. Finely developed bodies are pleasant to look at. This goes for human and animal. This fish does not turn me on! What do you think?
Meet Arnie, the Terminator Trout with the physique of a body-builder

Scientists have created a genetically-modified trout with the rippling muscles of a body-builder.
The mutant fish is the result of a decade-long effort by Terry Bradley, a professor of fisheries and aquaculture at the University of Rhode Island.
The rainbow trout’s enhanced muscle mass is between 15 to 20 per cent higher than that of a standard fish, thanks to Professor Bradley’s research into the inhibition of myostatin, a protein that slows growth.
The increased muscle mass will have commercial benefits in that larger fish can be grown without increasing the amount of food they need.
While the physical differences in the fish include a prominent dorsal hump, making it look as if it has muscular shoulders, and the appearance of ‘six pack abs’, no differences in behavior have been noted.
Describing the results as ‘stunning’, Professor Bradley told Science Daily: ‘Belgian blue cattle have a natural mutation in myostatin causing a 20 to 25 percent increase in muscle mass, and mice overexpressing myostatin exhibit a two-fold increase in skeletal muscle mass.
‘But fish have a very different mechanism of muscle growth than mammals, so we weren’t certain it was going to work.’
Luckily for Professor Bradley, it did work.
The team injected thousands of rainbow trout eggs with various DNA types designed to inhibit myostatin.
Of the eggs that hatched, those which carried the gene began to develop ‘body-builder’ physiques.
Professor Bradley added: ‘The results have significant implications for commercial aquaculture and provide completely novel information on the mechanisms of fish growth.
‘The results also allow for comparisons between the mechanisms of growth of muscle in mammals versus fish, and it could shed light on muscle wasting diseases in humans.’
